Peptide Positioning Inside Liposome Nanoreactors Controls Gold Nanoparticle Shape and Structure

Researchers from the Institute of Science Tokyo and the University of Leeds found that positioning biomineralization peptides in liposome nanoreactors can alter gold nanoparticle shape. The B3 peptide near the membrane produced branched structures, while changing the liposome with the cationic lipid DOTAP shifted B3 toward the interior and yielded spherical particles, suggesting a way to control nanoparticle growth by tuning the local reaction environment.
The team used transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping to examine the structures, finding that membrane-localized B3 produced Au/liposome assemblies with gold concentrated at their outer edges.
The researchers also tested a second biomineralization peptide, G1, which remained predominantly in the liposome’s aqueous interior.
The study was published in Advanced Functional Materials on August 18, 2026; the research team included Institute of Science Tokyo’s Graduate Student Yuya Abe and Associate Professor Masayoshi Tanaka, and University of Leeds Professor Stephen D. Evans.
