Canada commits C$20 million to modernize Mercer mill and counter U.S. trade pressure.

The funding was announced on August 26, 2026, during a mill visit to Mercer Peace River Pulp in Peace River, Alberta by The Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, the federal minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada.
Olszewski framed the investment within a stance that Canada did not choose a trade conflict with the United States, but will stand up for workers, businesses and communities under pressure.
The funding is provided under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), a federal program intended to support Canadian industries and communities facing tariff-related pressures, with PrairiesCan involved in delivering the package.
