Former Church Leader Christopher Brain Convicted of Multiple Sexual Offenses

At its peak, the Nine O’Clock Service had about 500 members, mostly university students and young adults, and its Sunday-night services featured live music and nightclub-style lighting.
The court heard that when Brain was ordained in 1991, he insisted on spending large sums so he could wear robes previously worn by Robert De Niro in the film The Mission.
A woman from Brain’s “homebase” team told the court she was reprimanded if her clothes were not provocative enough and recalled standing naked in front of him while he remained fully clothed; she described him as a “Jekyll and Hyde character.”
Brain shook his head slightly and exhaled when the jury returned its guilty verdict on the rape charge.
Christopher Brain, a former Church of England priest, has been convicted of rape and four sexual assaults in a second trial AOL. Combined with 17 indecent-assault convictions from an earlier proceeding, Brain now faces 22 sexual-offense convictions involving 13 women. Prosecutors said he used his authority over the Nine O'Clock Service, a tightly controlled evangelical group based in Sheffield, to systematically abuse women in his congregation.
Brain led the Nine O'Clock Service at its peak when it had about 500 members, mostly university students and young adults who gathered for Sunday-night services featuring live music and nightclub-style lighting East Renn News. The 57-year-old is now in custody awaiting sentencing, where victims are expected to give impact statements about the abuse they suffered.
The court heard detailed accounts of how Brain wielded his position to dominate members of his inner circle. One woman from his "homebase" team told the jury she was reprimanded if her clothes were not provocative enough. She also described standing naked in front of him while he remained fully clothed, painting him as a "Jekyll and Hyde character" Andover Advertiser. This pattern of control allowed him to exploit vulnerable young adults who trusted him as their spiritual leader.
When Brain was ordained in 1991, the court heard he demanded the congregation spend large sums so he could wear ceremonial robes previously worn by actor Robert De Niro in the film *The Mission* The Comet. This demand showed his narcissism and willingness to prioritize his own image over the needs of his flock. The expensive purchases masked the predatory behavior happening behind closed doors.
The Nine O'Clock Service operated as what prosecutors described as an "abuse cult" within the mainstream Church of England AOL. Members were isolated from outside influences and subjected to Brain's unpredictable behavior. Prosecutors argued this tight control created an environment where victims felt unable to resist or report his crimes. The church's evangelical approach and youth-focused appeal made it particularly attractive to vulnerable young adults seeking community and spiritual guidance.
When the jury returned its guilty verdict on the rape charge, Brain shook his head slightly and exhaled in the courtroom East Renn News. Victims have called out the Church of England for failing to protect them. One survivor said "Shame on Church of England," highlighting how institutional failures enabled Brain's abuse to continue for years without intervention or accountability from church leadership.
