Early college football season delivers major surprises and dramatic late-game finishes nationwide.

A month into the college football season, Oregon has fallen from No. 2 to No. 15 after a turbulent 3-1 start, while teams across the power conferences are producing unexpected surprises and disappointments. Boston College’s Mason McKenzie has accounted for most of the Eagles’ offense, and Cal has struggled to stop the run; other teams are also defying preseason expectations. Auburn students are weighing in after the Tigers’ loss to Florida as they look ahead to Tennessee. Elsewhere, Bloomsburg rallied from 21 points down to beat Shippensburg, while Penn State blew a late lead in a one-score loss to Wisconsin, extending its run of close-game defeats. Susquehanna also suffered its first loss, falling to Christopher Newport after committing six turnovers.
Boston College quarterback Mason McKenzie accounted for about 80% of the Eagles’ offense through four games, with 759 passing yards and 363 rushing yards. He scored both BC touchdowns in a 21-14 loss to Virginia Tech, including a career-high 138 rushing yards.
Cal allowed 277 rushing yards to UCLA and 255 to Clemson in its two marquee home games; the Golden Bears ranked 122nd nationally in rushing defense, giving up 190.5 yards per game.
Bloomsburg’s comeback featured a late fourth-down stop and a defense that held Shippensburg to 30 rushing yards while recording three sacks and 10 tackles for loss. A blocked punt by Louden Murphy was returned for a touchdown.
Penn State led Wisconsin 20-10 with less than four minutes remaining before the Badgers scored on drives of 75 and 85 yards. The loss was Penn State’s eighth straight in one-score games, dating to the 2024 Big Ten title game.
