Omaha's debut of RiverFront First Fridays was cut short before it could truly begin. Severe weather forced organizers to cancel the event, which was set to run from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Gene Leahy Mall pavilion, according to Omaha World-Herald.
The cancellation also pushed back the evening's Community Concert. The show, featuring Legends of Country with the Omaha Symphony, was postponed to Sunday, The Independent reported.
What Crowds Were Set to See Friday
The lineup for the debut event was packed. Saxophonist Chad Stoner was scheduled to perform live music. The Pear Tree dancers and the Raices de México dancers were also set to take the stage, according to York News-Times.
Families had other reasons to show up, too. Face painting by Ima Clown was on the schedule, along with a variety of interactive family activities. The event was free and open to the public at the Gene Leahy Mall pavilion.
Three More First Fridays Still Planned for 2025
Friday's event was only the first of four First Fridays planned for the year. Three more are still on the calendar, according to Fremont Tribune. Organizers have not said whether the cancelled debut will be rescheduled or replaced.
The series is part of a broader effort to bring regular public events to The RiverFront, Omaha's revamped downtown riverfront district. The Gene Leahy Mall reopened after a major renovation in 2022 and has since hosted large community gatherings.
Symphony Concert Pushed to Sunday After Cancellation
The evening's headline act will get a second chance. The Legends of Country concert with the Omaha Symphony was moved to Sunday rather than dropped entirely, Beatrice Daily Sun reported. No new time was immediately announced.
