Florence Pugh Credits Tom Holland for Helping Secure Her Spider-Man Cameo

Florence Pugh says Tom Holland helped set the stage for her Yelena Belova appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. After Black Widow debuted in 2021, Holland told a red-carpet interviewer he wanted to work with Pugh, prompting fan interest in the pairing and helping the idea gain momentum. Pugh later reprised Yelena alongside Holland’s Peter Parker in the film, which has become a major box-office hit. She is also set to return as Yelena in Avengers: Doomsday and as Princess Irulan in Dune: Part Three.
Yelena was introduced in Black Widow as Natasha Romanoff’s younger sister; within the MCU, she is also known as an assassin and the successor to the Black Widow title.
Pugh’s appearances as Yelena before Brand New Day included Hawkeye and Thunderbolts, in addition to Black Widow.
In Brand New Day, Yelena meets Peter Parker at a New York bathhouse she calls her “office,” in a scene described as a humorous, natural connection between the two characters.
Pugh singled out the film’s “potatoes” exchange as a favorite, joking: “When do you get to say ‘Potatoes’ to Tom Holland and it get taken seriously?”
