Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Premiere Psychological Thriller Adaptation Verity in New York

Michael Showalter’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller “Verity” stars Anne Hathaway as incapacitated bestselling author Verity Crawford, Dakota Johnson as writer Lowen Ashleigh, and Josh Hartnett as Verity’s husband, Jeremy. Hired to finish Verity’s book series, Lowen discovers a disturbing manuscript that raises doubts about Verity’s past, her family, and what is really happening at their Vermont home. A review describes the film as engrossing but frustrating, saying its deliberate unanswered questions leave viewers uncertain about the characters’ motives and who, if anyone, is the villain. Hathaway and Johnson have also said that they helped shape an unexpected intimate moment during filming. The film premiered in New York on September 29 and is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters October 2, 2026.
The family tragedy includes the drowning of the Crawfords’ daughter, Harper, which occurred after the car accident that left Verity incapacitated.
Lowen initially doubts she can take on Verity’s extremely violent book series, but Jeremy’s charm helps persuade her to accept the job and move to the Vermont home.
The film runs about 1 hour and 54 minutes and is rated R in the United States for sexual content, language, violence and bloody images.
The New York premiere followed an international gala screening in London on September 24; the film’s reported production budget is $40 million.
