Tether and Fasset Launch Gold-Backed Visa Card for Seamless Everyday Spending

Tether has partnered with digital banking platform Fasset to launch a gold-backed Visa credit/debit card that lets users spend and save using tokenized gold. The card runs on Visa’s global merchant network while automatically converting Tether Gold (XAUt/XAU₮) into Tether’s USD₮ and then into local fiat at the point of sale, aiming to remove the need for manual conversions. Cardholders can earn up to 6% cashback in XAU₮ on eligible purchases and can also opt for an automatic “spare change” round-up that invests spare amounts into more gold. Fasset supplies the wallet, multi-currency accounts, settlement, and regional off-ramp infrastructure to facilitate fiat conversion where Visa is accepted. The move is framed as a way to make tokenized gold more usable for everyday spending—especially in regions affected by currency volatility—and Tether says it will allocate up to $1 million in XAU₮ to support the rewards ecosystem and adoption. Analysts and coverage note the card’s success will depend on consumer uptake, merchant acceptance, and gold-price-linked stability.
Tether and Fasset described the product as the “first neobanking Visa card tied to gold,” explicitly framing it as bridging “physical gold holdings and everyday spending.”
Tether Gold (XAU₮) is presented as a digital token backed by physical gold stored in Swiss vaults—an added detail about the underlying asset behind the payment card.
The announced “up to 6%” rewards are not unconditional: coverage says cashback depends on “spending volume and card tier,” and is paid in XAU₮/“Tether Gold tokens” when qualifying conditions are met.
Reporting links the timing of the launch to macro conditions, noting gold prices have reached record highs amid “global economic uncertainty and inflation concerns,” and positioning tokenized gold as a potential hedge while still enabling spending.
The articles also quantify broader adoption/market context for tokenized gold: the tokenized gold sector was cited as surpassing $5.3 billion in market capitalization, with XAU₮ accounting for more than $2.6 billion.
