CME Group Inc. (CME): RBC reduced its holdings by 404,373 shares (a 12.1% cut) to 2,950,082 shares, worth about $871.307 million; institutional ownership of CME remains high at about 87.75%.
Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI): RBC sold 133,045 shares, lowering its stake to 2,922,098 shares, worth about $937.439 million.
Vanguard Small-Cap ETF (VB): RBC trimmed 111,620 shares, bringing its holdings to 2,091,328 shares with an approximate value of $547.761 million.
Royal Bank of Canada made notable portfolio moves in the first quarter, boosting some Vanguard ETF stakes while trimming others. The bank's largest position remains Vanguard Value ETF (VTV), which it nudged up by 0.6% to 5,815,364 shares worth about $1.14 billion, according to Watchlist News.
The adjustments signal RBC actively reshaping its equity exposure — adding to large-cap and mid-cap funds while pulling back from broad market and small-cap ETFs, and sharply cutting its stake in CME Group.
RBC grew its Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) stake by 34,371 shares during Q1. That brings its total to 5,815,364 shares, or about 0.70% of the entire fund. The position is worth roughly $1.14 billion, according to Watchlist News.
The bank also added 48,862 shares of Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (VO), lifting its holdings to 1,682,612 shares — about 0.52% of that fund. The VO stake is now valued at around $483.2 million. That is a 3.0% increase for the quarter, according to Watchlist News.
On the selling side, RBC shed 133,045 shares of Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), a 4.4% reduction. Its remaining stake of 2,922,098 shares is worth about $937.4 million. The bank also trimmed 111,620 shares of Vanguard Small-Cap ETF (VB), bringing that position down to 2,091,328 shares worth roughly $547.8 million.
The small-cap cut represents a 5.1% reduction in that holding. Together, the two sales removed more than $100 million in notional exposure from RBC's broad and small-cap equity positions.
The biggest reduction was in CME Group (CME). RBC sold 404,373 shares — a 12.1% cut — leaving it with 2,950,082 shares worth about $871.3 million. Despite the sale, institutional ownership of CME overall remains high at roughly 87.75%, according to Ticker Report.
CME Group operates the world's largest futures exchange. RBC's trim is notable given the size of the cut, though the bank still holds nearly $900 million worth of the stock.
The equity moves were not the whole story. RBC purchased 180,613 shares of Vanguard Short-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCSH), bringing its total there to 5,266,555 shares, according to Watchlist News. It also added 905,609 shares of Vanguard Total International Bond ETF (BNDX), a 10.3% increase to 9,677,209 shares total, according to Ticker Report.
The bond ETF additions suggest RBC was not simply reducing risk — it was rotating. The bank trimmed equity exposure in some areas while adding fixed-income and international bond coverage in others.
