India elects to bowl first against West Indies as Naman Dhir makes his T20I debut.

India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to field against West Indies in the opening match of their five-game T20I series in Lucknow, citing the mixed-soil pitch and expected evening dew. Naman Dhir made his T20I debut, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prince Yadav were left out of India’s playing XI. West Indies captain Shai Hope said his team also would have preferred to bowl first and emphasized adapting to conditions. Spinner Akeal Hosein reached 100 T20I appearances for West Indies.
India came into the series after winning gold in the men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games, with the team looking to carry that momentum into the five-match series.
India’s playing XI included Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Mayank Yadav.
West Indies captain Shai Hope said the side had six bowling options, including all-rounders, and needed to adapt to the conditions with new players in the team.
India made five changes from the Asian Games XI: Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Vipraj Nigam and Yash Thakur were absent, while Naman Dhir, Kuldeep Yadav and Mayank Yadav were among the new additions who featured in the match XI.
