World Foundation Raises $52.5 Million to Expand AI-Era 'Proof of Human' System Despite Regulatory Hurdles

Investors beyond Pantera included Ateko Holdings, Celini Capital, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto, with Eightco Holdings (Nasdaq: ORBS) also participating in the round.
World ID has grown to more than 39 million members, with 18 million verified by an Orb and 475 million ID proofs processed.
World ID is being integrated with major platforms and is moving toward an enterprise-ready release: World ID 4.0, enabling outside developers to build credentials; planned integrations with Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder.
The project has faced regulatory pushback across multiple jurisdictions, including Hong Kong ordering a halt in 2024, a Kenyan court deletion order, Brazil banning iris-payments, Spain halting data collection, and South Korea fining the project $830,000 for privacy violations.
Pantera Capital General Partner Cosmo Jiang described growing demand for Proof of Human as AI development accelerates, saying, 'The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development.'
The World Foundation has raised $52.5 million in a private token sale to expand World ID, its iris-scanning "proof of human" system co-founded by Sam Altman, according to Financial Content. Pantera Capital led the round, with Bain Capital Crypto, Susquehanna Crypto, and Eightco Holdings among the participants. All WLD tokens sold in the round are locked for one year.
The funds will go toward deploying World ID across businesses, consumers, and AI agents. World ID now has more than 39 million members, with 18 million verified by an iris-scanning device called the Orb, and 475 million identity proofs processed, Crypto Briefing reported.
Pantera Capital General Partner Cosmo Jiang explained the bet plainly. "The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development," he said. As AI-generated content and bots flood the internet, tools that confirm a real human is behind an account are gaining traction, according to Financial Content.
Beyond Pantera, the round included Bain Capital Crypto, Ateko Holdings, Selini Capital, Susquehanna Crypto, and Eightco Holdings, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker ORBS, Crypto Briefing reported. All investors face a one-year token lockup, a structure designed to align long-term incentives rather than quick profits.
World Foundation is building toward a major product release called World ID 4.0. The upgrade lets outside developers build their own credentials on top of the system. Planned integrations include Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder, according to Financial Content.
The move signals a shift from a consumer app toward a broad identity layer for the web. Businesses could use World ID to verify that customers, users, or AI agents are real humans — without storing names or personal data. The system uses iris scans to confirm uniqueness while keeping identity private.
World ID's growth has come with serious friction from governments. Hong Kong ordered the project to halt operations in 2024. A court in Kenya issued a data deletion order. Brazil banned iris-based payments. Spain halted data collection. South Korea fined the project $830,000 for privacy violations, according to Head Topics.
The core concern across all five countries is the same: collecting biometric data — especially iris scans — raises major privacy risks. Critics worry about how that data is stored, who controls it, and whether users truly understand what they are handing over. World Foundation says its system never stores raw iris images.
Despite the regulatory headwinds, big investors keep backing the project. This $52.5 million round follows earlier institutional support and shows that firms like Pantera and Bain Capital Crypto see long-term value in decentralized identity, Value The Markets noted. The token lockup structure also suggests investors expect this to be a multi-year build.
The broader case is simple: as AI agents become harder to tell apart from humans online, verified human identity becomes a scarce and valuable asset. World ID is betting it can become the standard layer for that verification — one Orb scan at a time, Bloomingbit reported.
