Father Pleads Guilty After Toddler Dies in Cyprus Hotel Window Fall

A two-year-old British boy died after falling nearly 40 feet from an open fourth-floor window at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel in Cyprus on July 12, the first day of his family’s holiday. A court heard that his father, Joshua Foster, 37, placed him on the windowsill to look at a nearby water park, believing the window was closed; the child fell before Foster could grab him. Foster has pleaded guilty to causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act, and is due to be sentenced on October 16.
The court heard that Foster’s blood alcohol concentration was estimated at 124mg; he had also spent eight days in custody after the incident.
After seeing his son fall, Foster took the lift downstairs and found him unconscious on the veranda; prosecutors said the boy’s mother rushed to the scene and held him in her arms. Resuscitation efforts failed, and the child had multiple skull fractures.
Foster’s guilty plea may also put his career as an auditor at risk: the court heard he had been told to expect a disciplinary process, with the possibility of being struck off.
The court heard Foster cooperated fully with police, and his lawyer described the consequences of the accident as something that would remain with Foster and his family for the rest of their lives.
