Blizzard Announces Animated Diablo Netflix Series and Teases More Franchise Adaptations

Johanna Faries described herself as a major Diablo player and said she was excited to bring the “indulgent darkness of Sanctuary” to life in the animated series.
Faries said Blizzard was not yet ready to disclose further information, telling fans, “I can’t spill the beans just yet” and promising more details when possible.
Microsoft’s broader entertainment strategy includes a live-action Sea of Thieves movie, following the success of A Minecraft Movie and the Fallout television series.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Microsoft does not intend to become “the biggest linear provider in the world,” but sees games as part of broader culture and entertainment, noting that other companies now have more interest in working with Xbox-owned properties.
Blizzard Entertainment announced an animated Diablo series in development at Netflix during BlizzCon 2026, marking the studio's first major foray into television adaptation. Newsy Today reported that Blizzard President Johanna Faries, a self-described "big Diablo player," will help bring the "indulgent darkness of Sanctuary" to the streaming platform, though no release date or production details were shared.
The announcement signals Microsoft's broader push to transform gaming franchises into film and TV content. Entertainment Weekly reported that Xbox leadership outlined this entertainment strategy in June 2026, with active discussions underway for Overwatch and Warcraft adaptations as well as a live-action Sea of Thieves movie.
During her keynote at BlizzCon 2026, Faries told fans she could not yet reveal specifics about the Diablo series. Anime Corner reported her statement: "I can't spill the beans just yet." She emphasized that Diablo is "just the beginning" and pledged to share more information as soon as possible. No cast, showrunner, or production timeline has been announced.
Microsoft does not aim to become a traditional television provider, but Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company views games as central to culture and entertainment. Entertainment Weekly reported Sharma's statement: "Great games are culture, and culture is entertainment." She noted that major studios now show more interest in partnering with Xbox-owned properties than ever before.
The strategy builds on recent wins. Amazon's Fallout series became the #2 most-watched show of all time on Prime Video. Call of Duty generates more entertainment revenue than the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Netflix has also found success with gaming adaptations like Arcane and Castlevania.
Blizzard's Diablo project is not the only adaptation in motion. Video Games Chronicle reported that active discussions are underway for both Overwatch and Warcraft television adaptations. These announcements come as Microsoft works to expand its gaming portfolio into prestige linear media that reaches broader audiences.
Diablo V, a new mainline game sequel, was also announced at BlizzCon 2026 with a spring 2029 release date. Play Day reported the game takes place in a ruined world where Diablo has already won, all heroes are dead, and players must navigate this fallen Sanctuary.
