Texas Rangers Place Pederson and Quantrill on Injured List Amid Postseason Push

The Texas Rangers’ 7-2 loss to the New York Mets extended their losing streak to three games and left their postseason hopes in serious jeopardy, with returning members of the 2023 championship team going a combined 1-for-15. The offensive struggles have persisted across three seasons despite changes in managers, hitting coaches and personnel, raising questions about the direction of the club and Corey Seager’s role after his late-season downturn. Texas is also managing a heavily taxed bullpen after its starting rotation faltered, recalling Gavin Collyer from Triple-A and activating Peyton Gray, who returned from elbow inflammation. The Rangers additionally lost designated hitter/first baseman Joc Pederson for at least the rest of the regular season and right-hander Cal Quantrill for the remainder of the regular season and postseason, further complicating their push for the American League West lead. Despite holding a 78-78 record and first place in the division at the time of the roster moves, the Rangers face mounting pressure to reverse their slide quickly.
Corey Seager’s .732 OPS is only 2% above league average, and he went 0-for-15 during the Rangers’ three-game losing streak, making his late-season performance a central offseason question.
The Rangers have used 87⅓ bullpen innings in September—the third-most in the majors—and 38 innings during the current homestand, the fifth-most in the league over that span.
Gavin Collyer posted a 1.69 ERA over his final 10 Triple-A appearances, while Peyton Gray had a 3.93 ERA in 48 games before elbow inflammation sidelined him. Manager Skip Schumaker said Gray would be “very useful for us down the stretch” and was “exactly what we need for righties and lefties.”
Joc Pederson was having a bounceback season before his injury, batting .235 with 26 home runs and an .816 OPS in 136 games; his 26 homers ranked second on the team.
Cal Quantrill had become an important part of the pitching staff, going 9-? with a 2.36 ERA in 32 appearances, including 15 starts, while filling in for multiple injured Rangers pitchers before his lat strain.
