Beloved Raccoon Honored
Governor Ferguson names beloved raccoon Jimothy 'Washingtonian of the Day' for his viral resilience
Anonymous
Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has named Jimothy — a raccoon with a rare spinal condition — as the state's "Washingtonian of the Day," according to KOMO News. Ferguson announced the honor in a video posted to social media, praising Jimothy's resilience. The raccoon became a viral star after video of him walking through a Seattle neighborhood spread across the internet.
Jimothy's fame has since grown far beyond a single clip. Fox San Antonio reports the raccoon has inspired murals, bobbleheads, merchandise, tattoos, and fan art across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Gov. Ferguson Honors Jimothy With Official State Recognition
Gov. Ferguson made the announcement in a social media video, singling out Jimothy's spirit in the face of a physical challenge. The "Washingtonian of the Day" title is a recognition the governor uses to highlight notable people — and, apparently, animals — from across the state. It is rare for a wild animal to receive the honor, WGXA noted.
Jimothy is believed to have a rare spinal condition that affects the way he walks. Despite the condition, he has been spotted moving through Seattle neighborhoods on his own, drawing attention from residents and passersby who filmed and shared his story online, according to News Channel 9.
From Viral Video to Murals, Bobbleheads, and Tattoos
A single video of Jimothy walking through Seattle was enough to turn him into an internet sensation. His unique gait caught people's attention almost immediately. Fans rallied around him, and his image quickly spread across social media platforms, according to Idaho News.
The fan response went well beyond likes and shares. Jimothy now has dedicated merchandise, custom bobbleheads, and murals painted in his likeness. Some fans have even gotten tattoos of the raccoon, according to News 3 Las Vegas. His story has been described as a symbol of perseverance.
Wildlife Officials Warn: Keep Your Distance From Jimothy
Despite all the goodwill, wildlife and public health officials have urged the public not to feed or approach Jimothy. Raccoons are wild animals. They can bite or scratch if they feel threatened, even if they appear friendly or calm, WGME reported.
The warning is meant to protect both the public and Jimothy himself. Feeding wild raccoons can make them dependent on humans and increase the risk of disease transmission. Officials want fans to admire him from a safe distance, according to Bakersfield Now.
