Jack Kerouac's 120-foot-long manuscript, "On the Road," was published six years later to acclaim and notoriety. The author and editor Gerald Howard describe it as a "once-in-a-lifetime, once-in a century achievement," a literary singularity. The book was inspired by Kerouach's quest to capture the American spirit within a single narrative. Despite initially delaying the novel's release, Kerouacs' agent, Sterling Lord, managed to secure an advance of $1,000 for the book. Since his death in 1969, the manuscript has sold millions of copies and inspired numerous literary quests to "find America."
