Regal Partners Ltd expanded its equity holdings across several public companies during the first quarter, filing new and enlarged positions in energy, financials, mining, and aerospace stocks. The fund's largest move was in Wells Fargo, where it added 58,976 shares to bring its total to 663,572 shares, worth roughly $52.83 million at quarter's end, according to Watchlist News.
The activity signals a broad push into diversified sectors. Beyond Wells Fargo, Regal opened a new stake in ConocoPhillips, bought into Canadian gold miner Iamgold, and added shares of aerospace services firm AAR Corp. The firm also picked up 69,071 shares of Chevron for about $14.29 million and 15,000 shares of Exelon worth roughly $735,000, per Ticker Report.
Regal grew its Wells Fargo stake by 9.8% in the first quarter. The 663,572 shares now represent about 2.9% of the fund's total portfolio. That puts the big bank at number 11 on Regal's list of largest holdings, according to Watchlist News.
Wells Fargo is one of the largest banks in the United States. Regal's move into a larger slice of the stock shows growing confidence in large-cap financials. The quarter-end value of the position sat at roughly $52.83 million.
Regal took a brand-new stake in ConocoPhillips, buying 44,410 shares valued at about $5.86 million. The firm also added 180,000 shares of natural gas company Comstock, worth around $549,000. Both were first-quarter filings. Regal's 69,071-share Chevron buy for $14.29 million was another fresh energy position, per Watchlist News.
On the mining side, Regal acquired 86,206 shares of Iamgold for roughly $1.62 million. Iamgold's total institutional ownership stands at 47.08%. Other funds moved into the stock too. Mariner LLC grew its position to 110,033 shares, worth about $1.814 million, according to Watchlist News.
Regal added 4,604 shares of AAR Corp., valued at about $504,000. The aerospace services company is a popular target for big funds. Institutional investors now own roughly 90.74% of AAR's total stock. Millennium Management LLC boosted its own AAR stake by 35.8%, bringing its total to 134,966 shares, per Watchlist News.
State Street Corp held 1,917,821 shares of AAR at quarter's end, making it one of the largest institutional holders. The broad demand from big money managers points to strong confidence in the aerospace and defense services sector.
Even as Regal bought into Comstock, Wall Street analysts are not uniformly bullish. UBS Group issued a 'reduce' rating on Comstock in a report dated June 22. Of the analysts covering the stock, two rate it Hold and one rates it Sell, according to Ticker Report.
Regal's Comstock position — 180,000 shares worth about $549,000 — is a relatively small bet. But the divergence between fund buying and analyst caution makes the stock one to watch. Regal also trimmed its Comfort Systems USA stake by 24.7%, dropping to just 1,657 shares, showing the firm is not afraid to cut positions while opening new ones, per Ticker Report.
