BTS Leader RM Co-Curates Major Modern Art Exhibition at SFMOMA

BTS leader RM has co-curated “RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me,” an exhibition opening Oct. 3 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that presents 142 works from his private collection alongside 36 from the museum. Bringing Korean art and traditional ceramics together with works by international artists, the exhibition offers a personal introduction to RM and his interests in Korean identity, art and collecting. RM collaborated with museum curators, wrote bilingual exhibition materials, recorded audio guides in Korean and English, and selected the gallery music. He has described the exhibition as a chance to share his inner life and a youthful Korean perspective through art.
The exhibition is RM’s first formal presentation of his collection under his own name; three years earlier, he had held an anonymous show in South Korea. His personal collection contains more than 400 artworks.
SFMOMA Director Christopher Bedford said some of the museum’s works selected for the exhibition were so rarely displayed that even museum staff had seldom seen them. The show is organized into seven sections.
RM said he received the proposal while serving in the military and accepted partly because the experience could help prepare him to eventually open an art space of his own.
SFMOMA described the project as its first collaboration with a K-pop artist, and Bedford said the museum hopes it will bring in people who encountered Korean and contemporary art through RM.
