Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor named new president and CEO of PhRMA.

PhRMA named former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor its next president and CEO, effective Nov. 9, succeeding Stephen Ubl, who has led the pharmaceutical trade group since 2015 and will remain as a strategic adviser. Cantor represented Virginia in Congress from 2001 to 2014 and later served as vice chairman and managing director at Moelis & Company; he will continue to serve on the firm’s board. As a lawmaker, he was a prominent industry ally who opposed proposals for Medicare drug-price controls. PhRMA leaders cited Cantor’s government and business experience as the group confronts policy challenges involving drug prices, innovation and access to medicines.
Cantor said the U.S. biopharmaceutical industry “leads the world” and that PhRMA member companies are pursuing treatments and cures for chronic and rare diseases.
Cantor left Congress after losing his 2014 Republican primary election.
PhRMA board chair and Merck CEO Rob Davis said the board aims to advance policies that strengthen U.S. biopharmaceutical innovation and expand patients’ access to medicines.
