House Democrats Prepare Sweeping Oversight and Subpoena Plans for Trump Administration

House Democrats say that if they win control of the chamber in November, they will use the increased staffing, investigative authority and subpoena power of the majority to scrutinize President Donald Trump, his family and his administration. Their proposed oversight would examine the Trump family’s business dealings and wealth, possible civil rights violations connected to immigration enforcement and deportations, and the closure of federal operations, among other issues. Democrats say their preparations are already reflected in letters to the administration and court filings. Hakeem Jeffries has pledged to hold officials accountable for alleged abuses, while Rep. Jamie Raskin has emphasized investigating systemic corruption and pursuing legislative remedies. Impeachment of Trump or Cabinet officials is not ruled out, though the effort’s scope would depend on election results and congressional investigations.
Democrats have challenged the closure of the Kennedy Center, opened inquiries into private funding for the America at 250 celebrations, and tracked the shutdown of federal operations including the U.S. Agency for International Development.
A recent wedding for Donald Trump Jr. reportedly was partly sponsored by a Russian oligarch with ties to the Kremlin, prompting further questions about the Trump family.
The proposed civil-rights inquiries include Americans killed while protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, as well as detained immigrants deported to distant countries.
