Australia Star Ezi Magbegor Suffers ACL Tear, Missing World Cup and WNBA Season

Magbegor was injured with about six minutes left in the first quarter after making contact with Italy’s Lorela Cubaj; she tried to hop on one leg before falling to the court.
Australia coach Sandy Brondello initially said it was a “good sign” that Magbegor could walk after the injury, before the ACL diagnosis was announced.
Before her injury, Magbegor averaged 15.6 points while shooting 60.5% from the field and 42.9% from 3-point range across Australia’s first three World Cup games.
Magbegor had averaged 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds over four World Cup games, while shooting 61% from the field.
Magbegor was drafted 12th overall by Seattle in 2019 and helped the Storm win the 2020 WNBA championship.
Australia captain Ezi Magbegor tore her right ACL during the team's 82-80 World Cup victory over Italy, ending both her World Cup and 2026 WNBA seasons Reuters. The 27-year-old Seattle Storm center was injured while driving for a layup with about six minutes left in the first quarter after contact with Italy's Lorela Cubaj. She tried to hop on one leg before falling to the court and did not return.
Magbegor's absence deals a major blow to Australia's frontcourt as the team faces Spain in the quarterfinals without her and fellow injured player Alanna Smith. For Seattle, the injury compounds an already difficult season: Magbegor played just 14 games due to a foot injury and facial fracture, averaging 6.9 points and four rebounds. The Storm sit 8-32 and are effectively eliminated from playoff contention.
Before the injury, Magbegor was thriving at the World Cup. She averaged 15.6 points while shooting 60.5% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range across Australia's first three games Reuters. Across four total World Cup games, she posted 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 61% from the field. Her efficiency and leadership had been crucial to Australia's early tournament success.
The Storm drafted Magbegor 12th overall in 2019, and she helped them win the 2020 WNBA championship Reuters. Now the team loses an experienced defensive anchor during a critical rebuild around young frontcourt prospects like Awa Fam and Dominique Malonga. Magbegor may miss substantial time beyond 2026, forcing Seattle to rethink its asset planning and roster construction for multiple seasons ahead.
Australia must now navigate the knockout rounds without two key interior players. Magbegor's absence removes the team captain's scoring, rebounding, and defense, while Alanna Smith's leg injury compounds the problem. The combined losses force Australia to rely more heavily on remaining players and unfamiliar lineup combinations against a tough Spain squad in the quarterfinals.
