Visa, Mastercard, Ant Announce AI Agent Framework

The collaboration will be developed through BuildFin.ai, an industry platform convened by Singapore’s Monetary Authority that brings together financial institutions, technology providers and researchers focused on responsible AI in financial services.
Ant International’s chief innovation officer, Jiang-Ming Yang, warned that AI-agent “hallucination” risk makes trust a prerequisite for wider adoption: “Trust is the foundation of the AI transformation.”
Antom’s agentic-payment solution was built on the Model Context Protocol and released as open source on GitHub, adding an open-development component to Ant’s payments strategy.
Ant International brings substantial scale to the negotiations: its Alipay+ cross-border network reaches more than 2 billion consumers and 150 million merchants, particularly across Asian markets where agent-payment pilots are expected to develop first.
Visa, Mastercard and Ant International announced a joint framework to verify AI agents and connect them to real people or organizations. The Know-Your-Agent standard aims to build trust and reduce duplicate setup costs as AI agents are projected to control $3 trillion to $5 trillion in consumer purchases by 2030, World Business Outlook reported.
The collaboration reflects a strategic race: unless Visa and Mastercard stay central to how AI agents pay, they risk losing commerce to bank transfers, digital wallets or stablecoins. The Know-Your-Agent framework establishes common security checks and trust signals. Each company keeps its own verification and risk rules, Investing.com reported. The goal: merchants, wallets and payment networks share one identity standard instead of checking AI agents separately three times over.
The framework builds on existing work: Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard's Verifiable Intent, and Ant's Agentic Mobile Protocol. Ant also released an agentic-payment tool as open-source code on GitHub, signaling commitment to shared development standards.
Payments currently flow through card networks — Visa and Mastercard dominate. But AI agents may prefer faster, cheaper routes like bank transfers or crypto. This partnership tries to keep cards central to how AI agents settle purchases and prove trustworthiness to merchants worldwide.
The framework development will happen through BuildFin.ai, a Singapore platform convened by the Monetary Authority that unites financial firms, tech providers and researchers on responsible AI in finance.
Jiang-Ming Yang, Ant International's chief innovation officer, warned that AI agents can "hallucinate" — invent false facts. This makes verification essential before agents handle money. He said: "Trust is the foundation of the AI transformation," SMBtech reported.
Ant expects agentic-payment pilots to grow first in Asia, where Alipay+ already operates. The open-source release of its payment protocol signals that Ant sees this as an industry standard to build, not a proprietary advantage to hoard.
