Senior IAS Officer Mandeep Bhandari Appointed as New CBSE Chairperson Amid Leadership Changes

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed 2001-batch AGMUT-cadre IAS officer Mandeep K. Bhandari as chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education, temporarily upgrading the post to Additional Secretary rank and pay. Bhandari, who serves as principal secretary to the Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor, succeeds Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, who had held additional charge before being named an additional secretary in the Union Home Ministry in July. The appointment follows leadership changes amid scrutiny of CBSE’s On-Screen Marking system for Class 12 answer sheets, including concerns about evaluation, scan discrepancies, technical problems and re-evaluation; the government has also ordered an inquiry into procurement of OSM-related services.

The earlier leadership reshuffle also replaced CBSE secretary Himanshu Gupta, who was prematurely repatriated to his parent cadre, the Ministry of Home Affairs, on administrative grounds; Varun Bhardwaj was appointed as his replacement.
