Disney is developing a new Sleeping Beauty film directed by Prey's Dan Trachtenberg.

Disney is developing an untitled film inspired by its 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty, with Prey director Dan Trachtenberg attached to direct. The project is in early development, its plot is under wraps, and it is not connected to Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent films. Trachtenberg developed the story with Rayna McClendon, while Alex Anfanger and Dan Schimpf are writing the screenplay. The pairing of Trachtenberg—known for science-fiction, action and horror—with the fairy-tale source suggests a fresh approach, though the film’s format and release date have not been announced.
Work on the 1959 animated Sleeping Beauty began in 1950. Walt Disney pushed for a distinctive visual style, contributing to production delays; the film initially received mediocre reviews and box office results before later earning greater critical and audience appreciation.
Trachtenberg is also set to produce the film alongside longtime partner Ben Rosenblatt and Star Wars producer Michelle Rejwan. Disney executives Jessica Virtue and Alina Mota are overseeing the project, reporting to Disney Live Action President Daria Cercek.
Screenwriters Alex Anfanger and Dan Schimpf co-created the absurdist comedy series Big Time in Hollywood, FL; one report suggested their background could signal that the film will not be a straight-faced retelling.
The 2014 Maleficent grossed $759.8 million worldwide, illustrating the commercial success of Disney’s previous live-action return to the Sleeping Beauty story.
