Trapped Busan Shark Draws Huge Crowds and Becomes Honorary Public Relations Ambassador

A roughly 11.5-foot shark nicknamed Bukangi has drawn about 600,000 visitors to Busan’s North Port after becoming trapped in a canal for nearly two weeks. The city named it an honorary public relations ambassador after residents strongly supported the move in an online poll. Attempts to guide the shark toward open water using boats and water sprays have failed, as it repeatedly avoided the crews and remained in the canal. Officials are planning another effort using a large net to channel it toward the exit, saying that returning the shark to the open sea is important for its safety and long-term health.
Officials identified Bukangi as a bronze whaler shark.
About 480,000 people visited the waterfront park during the four-day Chuseok holiday; the park typically averages around 2,000 visitors on weekend days.
The National Institute of Fisheries Science was preparing a specially designed net at least 50 metres long; officials tentatively planned to stretch it across the waterway and use another boat to drive the shark toward the exit.
Officials said they had detected no clear signs of Bukangi’s health deteriorating in the canal, although they still regarded release into open water as crucial.
