NRL Plans Grand Final Tribute for Retired Player Jai Arrow

The NRL and Rugby League Players Association made a special interchange arrangement so Arrow could reach his 100th game for South Sydney: he started the match, took the opening kick-off and was substituted off seconds later.
The NRL said it would donate $100,000 to Arrow’s family and $1 million to a fund supporting children who cannot afford to play rugby league.
The tribute plans reportedly include asking the sold-out crowd of about 80,000 to celebrate Arrow by making a gesture as if firing an arrow as he circles the stadium.
Liverpool sent Arrow a “You’ll Never Walk Alone” jersey the week before the reported tribute, as a show of support during his MND journey.
The musicians reportedly offered to donate any payment for performing to the John Farnham Foundation.
The NRL is staging a grand-final tribute to Jai Arrow, the former South Sydney star who retired after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease in May. Gold Coast Bulletin reports that Australian artists will perform "You'll Never Walk Alone"—the Liverpool anthem that has become linked to Arrow's journey—as he makes a lap of Accor Stadium before the decider.
Arrow will reach his 100th game for South Sydney thanks to a special arrangement: he started the match, took the opening kick-off, and was substituted off seconds later. The NRL announced it would donate $100,000 to Arrow's family and $1 million to a fund helping children who cannot afford to play rugby league.
Jai Arrow spent his career as a powerhouse lock for South Sydney. Motor neurone disease—a degenerative condition that affects nerve cells—forced him into retirement mid-season. Courier Mail reported the NRL worked with the Rugby League Players Association to design a special arrangement so Arrow could still reach the milestone of 100 games for his club.
Arrow took the opening kick-off in the grand final, then came off the field. The move allowed him to be counted as a starter and hit the 100-game mark. It was a rare moment of normalcy in his fight against a disease that has no cure.
The connection between Arrow and Liverpool's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" deepened when the club sent him a custom jersey. News.com.au reported Liverpool made the gesture the week before the tribute to show support during his MND journey. The song has become a symbol of Arrow's fight and resilience.
The anthem carries meaning far beyond sport. It speaks to struggle and standing together—themes that resonate with Arrow's battle and the rugby league community rallying behind him.
About 80,000 fans packed Accor Stadium for the grand final. Herald Sun reports the crowd will be asked to make a gesture mimicking an arrow shot as Arrow circles the stadium during the tribute. The moment is designed to celebrate him and raise awareness about motor neurone disease.
The NRL's $1 million donation to support children who cannot afford rugby league sends a clear message: Arrow's legacy extends far beyond his own story. Musicians performing the tribute reportedly agreed to donate any payment to the John Farnham Foundation, turning the moment into a collective act of giving.
