Journalism Without Paywalls
The Independent Offers Balanced Global News Without Paywalls, Sustained by Reader Donations for Open Access

The Associated Press captured some of the most powerful global news moments of July 2026 in a sweeping photo collection. Union Bulletin reported that the gallery features images ranging from front-page headlines to quieter moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The collection spans conflicts, policy consequences, and human stories from around the world. It offers a visual record of a month shaped by war, foreign aid cuts, and political ceremony.
Trump and Hegseth Honor Fallen Soldiers at Dover
One of the month's most striking images came on July 22. Tribune Ledger News reported that President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attended a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The ceremony honored four U.S. service members killed in the Middle East.
Dover Air Force Base is where fallen American troops return home. The solemn event placed two of the country's top leaders side by side in a rare public moment of mourning. It served as a stark reminder of the human cost of ongoing U.S. military operations abroad.
U.S. Aid Cuts Leave HIV Workers With No Safety Net
One of the month's most urgent human stories came from Nepal. Seattle PI reported on Princy Tamang, a former HIV outreach worker who lost her job after the U.S. cut foreign aid funding. With no income, she turned to sex work to survive.
Since making that shift, Tamang has been physically beaten and forced to have sex without condoms, according to Seattle PI. Her story puts a human face on the ripple effects of U.S. foreign aid cuts. Millions of dollars in global health funding were pulled, leaving workers like her without a lifeline.
AP Photos Capture a Month of Conflict and Crisis
Beyond specific events, the AP photo collection paints a broad picture of July's global mood. Woonsocket Call noted the gallery highlights both major headlines and powerful moments that might have slipped past the daily news cycle. Topics ranged from reproductive rights to climate change.
SE Missourian also carried the collection, noting that AP photographers fanned out across the world to document the month. Their images show protest, grief, resilience, and political power — all compressed into a single, scrollable record of July 2026.
Global Journalism Faces Pressure to Stay Open and Funded
The coverage of these events also raised questions about who gets to see important journalism. The Independent noted that it chooses not to use paywalls, believing quality reporting should be available to all Americans regardless of political background.
The outlet argued that stories about reproductive rights, Big Tech, and climate change are too important to lock behind fees. It relies instead on readers who can afford to donate. That model is being tested as global crises multiply and the demand for trustworthy reporting grows.
