High-tech sonar boosts fishing catches, sparks debate over sport's future and fish populations

A small screen on a fishing boat is changing the sport forever — and not everyone is happy about it. Forward-facing sonar, which lets anglers watch live fish react to their lures in real time, is spreading fast. Surveys in Minnesota found that 30% of all anglers now use the technology, and on some high-pressure lakes, that number reaches 63%, according to Yahoo! Finance.
The technology works like this: instead of showing what is directly below the boat, it scans up to 100 feet ahead — in real time. Garmin launched its LiveScope system in 2018, and it quickly became the industry standard. Rivals Lowrance and Humminbird followed with their own versions by 2021. Garmin sales executive Dave Dunn defends the product. He says it helps time-crunched anglers 'hone in' on fish quickly. Terry Rehm, a recreational angler in Minnesota, agrees. He says FFS lets him catch fish even on short trips when he can't afford to spend hours searching. But older sonar technology only showed what was under the boat. Randy Blaukat has fished professionally for 40 years. He calls forward-facing sonar an 'insult to bass fishing.' He argues that the technology removes the 'hunt' — the instinct and skill of reading the water — and replaces it with reading a screen. 'It turns a natural pursuit into a digital one,' he has said. He is the loudest voice calling for an outright ban.
Professional fishing organizations are starting to listen. In September 2024, the National Professional Fishing League became the first major circuit to ban FFS entirely for its 2025 season. B.A.S.S. took a softer approach, capping anglers at one FFS transducer and 55 total inches of screen, according to Bassmaster. For 2026, B.A.S.S. announced FFS will be banned at roughly half its Elite Series events — chosen by a coin flip.
The deeper concern is not fairness — it is survival. A new study by the USGS and several universities found that Minnesota anglers harvest about 80 million pounds of fish per year. That is more than double the state DNR's previous estimate of 30 million pounds, according to Outdoor Life. Researchers believe FFS is a major reason catch rates have surged.
Brad Parsons, Minnesota's fisheries chief, is already acting. He has proposed cutting the walleye bag limit from 6 fish to 4, calling it good stewardship in the face of rising angler efficiency. In May 2026, the University of Minnesota launched a $676,000, three-year study to measure exactly how FFS changes catch rates, according to MPR News. Fisheries ecologist Cam Mosley is leading the research.
The debate mirrors fights in other sports. The NPFL pointed to Major League Baseball's ban on aluminum bats and PGA limits on golf club technology when justifying its FFS ban. The argument is the same: when gear gets too powerful, it is the equipment winning — not the athlete. Some fear the same is happening on the water, according to The Star.
But younger anglers push back. Pro angler and content creator Ben Milliken argues that banning FFS is regressive. He says technology has always evolved in sport, and FFS makes fishing more engaging for a generation raised on digital screens — potentially saving a sport that has struggled to attract young participants. The two camps are not getting closer. Professional bass fishing may end up permanently split between a 'traditional' league and a tech-friendly one, according to The Winnipeg Free Press.
