Communities Nationwide Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With Local Events and Cultural Programs

Hispanic Heritage Month is being marked across the country with community events, cultural performances and educational programs. In Indiana, the Allen County Public Library is hosting free activities through Día de los Muertos, including crafts and a community altar; Texarkana College and Lancaster are also holding celebrations featuring food, music and folklórico performances. In Louisiana, historians and community leaders are highlighting Spain’s lasting influence on the state, including its role in the American Revolution and the Spanish colonial architecture of New Orleans’ French Quarter. President Donald Trump is also hosting a White House celebration, a show of outreach to Latino voters that contrasts with his administration’s hard-line immigration policies.
Allen County Public Library’s community ofrenda will include photos submitted by residents; photos can be delivered to the Main Library’s Genealogy Center or submitted online through Oct. 15.
The library’s schedule also includes an inclusive craft session for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities and their caregivers, who can make a paper bouquet of cempasúchil marigolds at the New Haven Branch on Oct. 26.
Texarkana College’s Hispanic Student Association is open to students who want to learn about Hispanic culture and also supports people arriving from Spanish-speaking countries. The festival is its major fall event, with another celebration held in spring for Cinco de Mayo.
More than 40% of Lancaster city residents are Hispanic. Mayor Jaime Arroyo, the city’s first Puerto Rican mayor, said Hispanic heritage is “a big part of what makes Lancaster city special.”
At the White House event, Trump was expected to highlight efforts to tighten sanctions on Cuba; an August sanctions announcement targeted five Cuban entities and eight individuals. The article also reported that pressure on the island has worsened its already-struggling electric grid, contributing to blackouts.
