SpaceX Starship V3 completes 13th test flight with successful intact splashdown

SpaceX's 13th Starship test flight ended with the spacecraft landing mostly intact in the Indian Ocean, marking a major milestone for the world's most powerful rocket, according to Florida Today. The flight debuted Starship's Version 3 design — and completed it without an explosion or major fire, a first for the program.
The Super Heavy booster, which powers the rocket off the launch pad, hit the water harder than planned. But the ship itself came down in good shape, TC Palm reported. SpaceX called it 'lucky number 13.'
The 13th test flight was the first to fly Starship's Version 3 design. SpaceX built it to be stronger and more capable than earlier versions. The rocket completed its full flight path and splashed down in the Indian Ocean largely intact, according to Herald Tribune. That outcome marked a clear step forward from earlier tests, which ended in mid-air explosions.
The Super Heavy booster did not stick its landing as planned. It hit the water harder than SpaceX intended, Naples News reported. Still, engineers said the overall mission was a success. No major fires broke out, and the ship stayed in one piece through splashdown.
SpaceX is working to bring Starship launches to Florida, possibly before the end of 2025. The company is building a launch tower at LC-37 at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral, Florida Today reported. Right now, all Starship flights take off from Boca Chica, Texas.
Adding a Florida launch site would give SpaceX more flexibility. It would also put Starship closer to the infrastructure SpaceX already uses for its Falcon 9 rocket launches on the East Coast.
Once Starship is fully operational, it will carry up to 60 Version 3 Starlink satellites in a single launch, according to The Ledger. That is more than double the 29 satellites SpaceX typically sends up on a Falcon 9 rocket. The jump would dramatically speed up Starlink's internet network expansion.
Starlink satellites deliver broadband internet from low Earth orbit. Getting more of them up faster means SpaceX can grow its network more quickly and cut costs per satellite launched.
SpaceX is under contract with NASA to use Starship as a lunar lander for the Artemis program. The goal is to return astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972. Each successful test flight brings that mission closer, St. Augustine Record reported.
NASA needs Starship to land on the moon's surface and bring crew members back to the orbiting spacecraft. The timeline for that mission depends heavily on how quickly SpaceX can make Starship fully operational. Test flight 13's clean splashdown is a positive sign for that schedule.
