Pentagon Plans Twenty Percent Reduction in Generals and Admirals by 2027

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to announce a 20 percent cut in the number of military jobs reserved for generals and admirals, according to Pentagon officials. This move is part of Hegsettingh's larger effort to shrink the Pentagon's senior leadership layer and give more authority to commanders. The announcement will be made during a State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Army, Navy and Air Force leaders have been told to complete the reductions by Jan. 1, 2027. While the reduction does not require the Pentagon to fire one in five current officers, some positions may be downgraded. Federal law limits the number general and flag officers allowed to serve on active duty, and Congress may later decide if this needs to change.
