VA Awards $112 Million To Community Organizations For Veteran Suicide Prevention

The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded more than $112 million through its Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program to 191 community organizations nationwide, with funding available beginning in fiscal year 2027. Reported awards include more than $1 million in the Wichita-area VA region, $1.56 million in North Carolina, $791,000 in Arkansas, nearly $699,000 in North Dakota, $2.93 million in Oklahoma, nearly $1.98 million in Pennsylvania, $3.7 million in Colorado, and more than $1.8 million in Alabama. The grants fund community outreach, mental health screening and care, peer support, emergency assistance, and help connecting veterans with VA resources, especially those not receiving VA health care. The VA says 61% of veterans who died by suicide in 2023 had not received VA health care in the preceding year; in 2025, grant organizations served about 17,000 veterans, service members, and family members, connected 344 at-risk veterans with emergency mental health care, and linked 2,647 veterans new to VA services with care and resources. The Oklahoma awards come amid concern about the state’s high veteran suicide rate, while Colorado funding in the Grand Valley targets a region where the suicide death rate is more than twice the national average.
The VA’s latest data showed veteran suicides declined slightly, from 6,422 in 2022 to 6,398 in 2023, averaging 17.5 deaths per day.
North Dakota’s award is its first through the program; before it, the state was one of only five that had never received funding. Sen. Kevin Cramer and Sen. Chris Coons had introduced legislation to prioritize states without prior awards.
The two Arkansas grant recipients are Centers for Youth and Families, Inc. and Reboot Recovery.
In fiscal 2026 through Sept. 20, the VA Veterans Crisis Line answered more than 1.3 million calls, chats and texts—up 7.1% from the prior year—and reported a 97.3% satisfaction rate.
