Disney Names Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as First Company-Wide Chief Technology Officer

CEO Josh D’Amaro described Disney’s technology strategy as having three priorities: keeping “great storytelling as our North Star,” putting “technology in service of creativity,” and operating as “One Disney.”
Anand’s appointment followed other leadership changes at Disney: Adam Smith became chairman of Direct-to-Consumer at Disney Entertainment, while former co-chair Joe Earley moved to a new franchise and content role at Disney Entertainment Television.
Before joining Character.AI, Anand was part of the Microsoft team that built the Azure cloud-computing platform, adding cloud-infrastructure experience to his background in consumer technology, product development and AI.
Character.AI’s restrictions on minors followed a lawsuit concerning the death of a 14-year-old Florida boy; the boy’s mother alleged that the platform’s design was addictive and manipulative. Under the subsequent policy, minors retained access to previous conversations and image and video tools.
D’Amaro praised Anand as an “expert builder and strategist” who is both technically and product-minded and has “sharp instincts for what fans actually want.”
