The actor said the physical demands—constant crouching and pivoting on his feet and ankles—took a toll on his body, and at age 50, he believes he cannot perform the role again Deadline.
Rocket survived Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and became leader of a new team including Kraglin, Groot, Cosmo, and Adam Warlock. Marvel has not asked Gunn to return or announced whether the character will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday Yahoo.
Nearly a Decade of Crouching and Physical Pain
Gunn performed Rocket's motion reference across five films: all three Guardians movies, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. He also suited up for Thor: Love and Thunder and a holiday special TheWrap. The role required him to stay bent over and shift his weight constantly on his feet and ankles.
The physical strain affected his lower body over time, though Gunn noted his knees held up well. At 50 years old, he said he could not physically sustain the crouched position required for the character Yahoo.
Playing Kraglin Offered a Welcome Break
While performing Rocket's motion work, Gunn also played Kraglin, the Ravager, in the same films and the holiday special. This dual role let him stand at full height during some scenes rather than remain hunched over Deadline. Kraglin appeared in the new Guardians lineup established at the end of Vol. 3.
Marvel Stays Silent on Rocket's Next Chapter
The Guardians are noticeably absent from Marvel's announced Avengers: Doomsday cast. The studio has not confirmed whether Rocket will return or what the character's future holds in the MCU Yahoo. Gunn said Marvel has not approached him about reprising the role.
