India Bank Unions Plan Three-Day Strike Threatening Month-End Remittance and Banking Services

India’s United Forum of Bank Unions has called a nationwide bank strike for September 28–30, seeking a five-day workweek, including holidays on all Saturdays; the action could disrupt in-person banking and some services for customers abroad. To help limit the disruption, public-sector banks and some regional rural banks are scheduled to open on Sunday, September 27, though not all banks will necessarily be open. Remittances from the UAE and Oman are generally expected to continue through exchange houses and digital channels, while online banking, UPI and ATMs are also expected to remain available. Transfers that require manual processing, compliance checks or other action by a receiving bank could take longer, so expatriates with urgent payments may want to send funds early. Some public-sector banks have also announced temporary waivers of certain ATM fees during the strike.
The strike is timed at month-end, when many people receive their salaries, which could add pressure to in-person banking services.
Besides the five-day-week demand, the unions had sought withdrawal of the Performance Linked Incentive scheme; the government said it had put the scheme in abeyance after discussions with unions. A one-day strike was held on September 11, and an indefinite strike over the workweek demand was proposed for October 26.
The UAE is India’s second-largest source of remittances, accounting for 19.2 per cent of inflows, and its Indian diaspora numbers about 4.3 million, according to The National.
The disruption may extend beyond the strike period: the Oman report says banks are expected to reopen on October 1, followed by a bank holiday on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti.
