Apollo Global Management Establishes Austin as Second Headquarters to Drive Strategic Growth

Apollo announced in March that it was evaluating locations in Texas or South Florida as part of expanding talent outside New York.
Bloomberg Law reports that the Austin office will be led by Apollo's head of capital solutions and the co-president of Athene.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Texas already houses the largest financial services workforce in the nation and that Apollo's Austin expansion will advance Texas’s global leadership in financial services.
The Austin hub is described as incubating emerging and new businesses across Apollo and Athene's asset management and retirement solutions platform.
Apollo Global Management has picked Austin, Texas, as its second headquarters, the private equity and asset management giant announced. The Austin hub will focus on product development, distribution, technology, and market-making — a major push to grow beyond Apollo's longtime New York base. MarketScreener reported the office will be led by Apollo partners Eric Needleman and Mike Downing.
CEO Marc Rowan described the move as part of a long-term plan to grow both Apollo and its insurance unit Athene. Texas Governor Greg Abbott called it a sign that Texas is "the new financial capital of America," adding the state already hosts the largest financial services workforce in the nation, according to Texas Border Business.
The Austin office is designed as a testing ground for new ideas. Bisnow reported it will serve as a hub for emerging and new businesses across both Apollo and Athene's asset management and retirement solutions platforms. Needleman heads Apollo's capital solutions division. Downing serves as co-president of Athene, Apollo's retirement services arm.
The hub will focus on four key areas: building new products, expanding distribution to clients, developing trading and market-making capabilities, and advancing Apollo's technology strategy. Apollo described the goal as "incubating" businesses that don't yet exist in their current form. The firm wants Austin to be where that creation happens.
The decision did not come out of nowhere. Apollo announced in March that it was actively evaluating locations in Texas or South Florida to expand its talent base outside New York. Austin won out. The firm cited access to a deep talent pool and a business-friendly environment as key factors in the choice, according to MarketScreener.
Apollo joins a growing list of financial firms setting up operations in Texas. The state has attracted banks, hedge funds, and asset managers in recent years. Texas offers no state income tax and a lower cost of living than New York, making it easier to hire and retain workers.
Governor Abbott was quick to claim credit for the win. He said Apollo's expansion "will advance Texas's global leadership in financial services." Abbott has aggressively recruited financial firms to the state, pitching Texas as a rival to New York for financial industry dominance. Texas Border Business noted his remarks framed Austin as a rising global finance hub.
Abbott's claim that Texas has the largest financial services workforce in the nation adds weight to Apollo's choice. A larger local talent base means Apollo can hire faster without relying solely on relocating workers from New York. That makes the Austin hub easier to build and scale over time.
Apollo manages more than $650 billion in assets globally. Adding a second headquarters is a significant structural bet. The firm is signaling it cannot grow fast enough by relying on New York alone. Austin gives Apollo a second center of gravity — one built from scratch around innovation rather than inherited legacy operations, Bisnow reported.
Athene, Apollo's retirement unit, is central to this strategy. Athene manages billions in insurance and annuity assets and needs new products to stay competitive. Austin is meant to be the place where those products get built. Rowan's statements made clear this is a long-term commitment, not just a satellite office.
