Polk County school bus crash kills a student and driver after collision.

A Polk County school bus carrying 39 people — 37 of them Winter Haven High School students — collided with two other vehicles on State Road 544 around 6:15 a.m., killing a 10th-grade student and the driver of a white Chevrolet Malibu, according to MySunCoast. The westbound Malibu crossed the center line and struck the bus near its rear wheels, causing it to flip onto its roof and collide head-on with a silver Jeep. Sheriff Grady Judd called it "the most horrific bus tragedy we've had in decades."
Twenty-six students were transported to hospitals after the crash on Lucerne Park Road, about 1.5 miles west of U.S. 27 in Winter Haven. One person remained in critical condition, while others were treated and released, TampaBay28 reported. The National Transportation Safety Board announced a safety investigation into the collision.
The white Chevrolet Malibu was heading westbound when it crossed into the opposite lane around 6:15 a.m. The vehicle struck the school bus near its tandem rear wheels, MySunCoast reported. The impact tore off a tire and caused the bus to lose traction. The bus skidded across the center line into oncoming traffic, then hit a silver Jeep head-on. The force of the collision flipped the school bus onto its roof.
The silver Jeep caught fire after the impact. Emergency responders closed Lucerne Park Road in both directions and dispatched trauma alerts. Helicopters and ambulances transported the most seriously injured students to nearby hospitals. Superintendent Frederick Heid noted that evacuation drills likely saved lives, saying the crash "could have been far worse" given the condition of the bus.
A Winter Haven High School 10th-grader died in the crash, along with the driver of the Malibu. The bus driver's 9-year-old daughter was also in the Malibu. Twenty-six students were transported to hospitals after the collision, with one person listed in critical condition. Another 10 younger patients were treated and released by AdventHealth Heart of Florida, TampaBay28 reported.
Sheriff Grady Judd described the scene as devastating. "We had a beautiful 10th grade girl lose her life," he said at a joint media briefing at the AdventHealth Fieldhouse. No charges or arrests have been announced against the Malibu driver. Investigators are cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board on their federal safety inquiry.
Winter Haven High School immediately deployed grief counseling teams across the district to support students and staff affected by the tragedy. School leaders emphasized that emergency preparedness training, including evacuation drills, helped minimize harm during the rollover. The district's crisis response team remained on campus to assist families in the days following the crash.
Political leaders across Florida expressed sympathy for the victims and the community. The crash reignites ongoing debates over school bus safety standards, including mandatory seat belt installation and enhanced structural reinforcement on vehicles carrying students. Federal investigators will examine the bus's structural integrity, tire retention systems, and roadway safety conditions on State Road 544.
