Ghana Police Arrest Seven Individuals Over Illegal Sale of Cedi Money Bouquets

The Bank of Ghana and Ghana Police have arrested seven people in Accra accused of using cedi banknotes to make money bouquets and cakes for sale. The central bank says using currency for decorations at weddings, birthdays and other events is unlawful, and warned that anyone who takes part in or facilitates the practice may be prosecuted. It also cautioned against spraying, damaging or otherwise misusing banknotes and coins; penalties may include fines or imprisonment.
The seven suspects were arrested in a joint police–central bank swoop targeting people involved in producing and selling money bouquets, and were subsequently arraigned at Police Headquarters in Accra.
A Bank of Ghana public notice dated July 14, 2026, says using notes and coins for decorations—including jewellery and other artistic creations—may constitute offences under the Currency Act, 1964 (Act 242).
The notice also specifically lists tearing, crumpling, staining, defacing and mutilating currency among prohibited practices, in addition to spraying, scattering or stepping on notes.
