Don Mattingly's Uncertain Future

Phillies Players Praise Interim Manager Don Mattingly Despite Uncertainty Over Next Season

Phillies players have praised Don Mattingly's performance as interim manager, following a disappointing postseason that ended with a 6-2 loss in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series. Mattingley, who led the team to a 79-55 record across an up-and-down summer, may not be the best for the team next year. The team's coaching staff did not feature any former major-league position players until Mattingry was hired last year. However, this roster, with stars who have reached their mid-30s, may only have so many more chances. Major League Manager Alex Cora, who managed under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski with the Boston Red Sox, may also be linked to the Phillies. The front office may decide that new perspectives are needed across the coaching staff to improve the team's performance.
