Friendship and Community Support Take Center Stage During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Stories marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month emphasize friendship, community support, survivorship and early detection. Jennifer Taylor, diagnosed with stage 2 triple-positive breast cancer in 2025, is undergoing intensive treatment with support from childhood friend Adrien Finkel, who accompanies her to appointments and helps document the experience. Community events include survivor gatherings, fashion shows and local-business events in California and North Carolina, as well as a Links for Life 5K and walk; the organization also provides practical assistance and support groups. Health professionals say mammograms generally should begin at age 40, with earlier screening considered for people at elevated risk. In Wisconsin, survivor Brenda Wicks’ annual gathering honors 260 people who survived or died from breast cancer and aims to encourage more open conversations about the disease.
Jennifer Taylor’s treatment has included 12 weeks of initial chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, 20 rounds of radiation and chemically induced menopause; she is also receiving ENHERTU through December.
Salisbury’s Ladies Night Out will feature three survivors modeling outfits donated by local boutiques after salon makeovers; proceeds from nonmember admission donations will benefit Novant Health Foundation’s Breast Health Fund.
Adventist Health’s AIS Cancer Center offers breast cancer nurse navigators to guide patients through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, as well as post-diagnosis wellness activities including fitness classes, yoga and chair fitness.
Links for Life provides grocery and nutrition cards during active treatment, a wig boutique and support groups that include a Spanish-language group and a group for husbands and partners; it is also conducting breast cancer research with Cedars-Sinai in Kern County.
Brenda Wicks said she had no insurance during her treatment and learned about Wisconsin’s Well Woman Program, offered through the state Department of Health Services.
