Five Dead and Ten Injured in Pharma Unit Boiler Explosion in Tirupati

A boiler explosion tore through a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant at Sri City in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh on October 3, killing at least five workers and critically injuring over ten others. IBTimes reported that the blast occurred around 8 a.m. at the TIL Healthcare facility, causing extensive damage and triggering immediate rescue operations. Emergency crews evacuated injured workers to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.
Among the identified dead are Gourab Roy, Chinna Mastan (36), Ramesh (40), and Vasu (36), who died at a Chennai hospital. News Meter confirmed that over ten workers suffered critical injuries in the blast. Authorities are investigating whether technical failure, a safety system breakdown, or another factor triggered the explosion at the facility, which exports pharmaceutical products to 54 countries.
The explosion struck the TIL Healthcare plant while workers were on duty during the morning shift. The News Minute reported that the boiler detonated at approximately 8 a.m., triggering a massive fire and causing the roof to partially collapse. The blast wave extended beyond the production area, hitting workers in the company canteen and adjacent zones during shift changes.
One survivor described the moment the explosion struck: "I asked for idlis and had just started eating when fire erupted... my chest started burning and my throat felt completely burnt." Fire tenders and police arrived within 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze and begin rescue operations that lasted several hours.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep grief over the tragedy and instructed officials to provide maximum support to affected families. News on Air confirmed that Tirupati District Collector and police officials inspected the site to assess the damage. State health authorities mandated advanced medical care for all critically injured workers across local and Chennai hospitals.
Nara Lokesh, AP Minister for IT and Human Resources, called the incident "a tragic loss" and pledged government assistance. He stated: "The government will extend all possible support to the families of those who lost their lives." Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Sudheer Reddy coordinated hospital relief efforts for injured workers.
The explosion at TIL Healthcare marks another major industrial accident in Andhra Pradesh. Munsif Daily noted that the facility is located in Sri City Special Economic Zone, which houses over 250 manufacturing units. Past incidents include eight workers killed in a molten steel spill at RINL Visakhapatnam in June 2026, and 21 deaths in a Kakinada firecracker blast in February 2026.
Labor organizations and opposition leaders have raised concerns about routine safety audits across the industrial zone. Authorities are now launching forensic investigations to determine if the explosion resulted from mechanical pressure failure, technical malfunction, or breached safety protocols. The incident is expected to trigger stricter safety reviews across all Sri City manufacturing facilities.
