Frozen Berry Recall Expands to Walmart and Trader Joe's Across 33 States

The recall traces back to an earlier July 3 recall of Publix GreenWise organic frozen blueberries; Article 1 says 12 E. coli illnesses had been linked to that product.
The recalled Trader Joe’s Organic Mixed Berry Blend has UPC 00977654 and lot code 6 051 01; the lot code is printed on the back of the bag, and the affected package’s best-before date is Feb. 20, 2028.
The E. coli O145:H28 strain can, in some cases, lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a dangerous form of kidney failure. The report also says the outbreak investigation had ended, though the expanded recall remained in effect.
A Chilean fruit company has expanded its frozen-berry recall to 33 states after potential E. coli O145 contamination was detected. The expanded recall now includes specific lots of Great Value Organic Blueberries and Triple Berry Blend at Walmart, plus Trader Joe's Organic Mixed Berry Blend, according to Parade. The products were distributed across 30 states and Puerto Rico for Walmart items and 26 states plus Washington, D.C., for Trader Joe's.
The recall traces back to an earlier July action involving Publix GreenWise organic frozen blueberries, which had been linked to 12 E. coli illnesses, Local 12 reported. While the newly recalled products have no illnesses listed yet, a related outbreak sickened 17 people and hospitalized six. Consumers should check package UPCs and lot codes immediately and discard affected berries or return them to retailers for refunds.
For Trader Joe's Organic Mixed Berry Blend, look for UPC 00977654 and lot code 6 051 01, printed on the back of the bag. The affected package has a best-before date of February 20, 2028, Totally The Bomb noted. Great Value products at Walmart have multiple affected lot codes across both blueberry and triple-berry blend varieties.
Check your freezer for these brand names and UPCs before consuming any frozen berries from your home. The FDA posted detailed recall information with specific lot numbers for each product type. If you find a matching product, do not eat it—discard it safely or return it to the store where purchased.
The contamination involves E. coli O145:H28, a strain that can trigger serious complications in some cases. One major risk is hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe form of kidney failure that requires immediate medical attention. KY3 reported that this Chilean-based fruit company expanded the recall after traceback investigations linked frozen blueberries to the original contamination source.
E. coli infections typically cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Symptoms can appear 1 to 8 days after eating contaminated food. Children and elderly people face higher risk of developing kidney failure. If you or a family member ate these berries and now has severe symptoms, seek medical care immediately.
The first recall began in July 2024 when Publix GreenWise organic frozen blueberries tested positive for E. coli O145. Newsy Today reported that investigators traced the contamination back to Futas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., a frozen-fruit supplier based in San Carlos, Chile. That initial action linked 12 illnesses to the product.
A September follow-up expanded the recall further. This latest expansion adds Walmart and Trader Joe's private-label products to the list after traceback data confirmed they shared the same contamination source. The outbreak investigation has ended, though the recall remains in effect until all affected inventory is removed from store shelves.
