Israeli Forces Kill Suspect and Detain Two Amid Expanding Military Operations in Southern Syria

The IDF has deployed troops at nine posts in southern Syria since Bashar al-Assad’s fall, mostly inside a UN-patrolled buffer zone.
Syrian state media reported that Israeli bulldozers and military vehicles were digging a deep trench near the 1974 disengagement line to expand the so-called “Sufa 53 Line” barrier.
At the UN General Assembly, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa accused Israel of carrying out 500 airstrikes, more than 1,200 cross-border incursions and 300 detentions in Syria, and called for Israeli troops to withdraw to their positions before Assad’s fall.
The UN figure cited in the report was at least 588 aid workers killed in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and February 9, 2026; it includes UN, NGO and Palestine Red Crescent Society personnel and volunteers.
Israeli forces killed a man suspected of infiltrating a military post in southern Syria and detained two others on a motorcycle in separate incidents, the IDF said. Times of Israel reported no soldiers were injured. The incidents underscore Israel's expanded military presence in Syria following Bashar al-Assad's ouster, which Damascus says violates a 1974 peace agreement.
Meanwhile, a Turkish humanitarian worker was killed in an Israeli strike in southern Gaza. Daily Sabah reported that Saqr Nabil Musa Qaisi, a volunteer for the Deniz Feneri Association, died when a strike hit a vehicle in the southern Gaza Strip. The UN has documented at least 588 aid worker deaths in Gaza since October 2023.
The IDF has deployed troops at nine military posts in southern Syria since Assad's fall, mostly inside a UN-patrolled buffer zone. Today reported that Israeli bulldozers and military vehicles are digging a deep trench near the 1974 disengagement line to expand the so-called "Sufa 53 Line" barrier. Syrian officials view this expansion as a violation of the decades-old accord.
At the UN General Assembly, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa laid out a stark accusation: Israel has carried out 500 airstrikes, more than 1,200 cross-border incursions, and 300 detentions in Syria since Assad's ouster. Al-Sharaa called on Israeli troops to withdraw to their positions before Assad fell, signaling Damascus's growing frustration with Israel's military actions.
The killing of Qaisi adds to a grim toll for aid workers in Gaza. The UN has recorded at least 588 aid worker deaths—including UN staff, NGO personnel, and Palestinian Red Crescent volunteers—between October 7, 2023, and February 9, 2026. Daily Sabah noted that Al-Aqsa Hospital also confirmed Qaisi's death in the strike.
Gaza's Health Ministry reports that Israeli forces have killed more than 1,440 people since the ceasefire began, underscoring the scale of ongoing violence. The death toll among humanitarian workers reflects the dangers aid organizations face operating in the territory's devastated infrastructure and active conflict zones.
Times of Israel reported that the IDF shot at two suspects approaching a military post on a motorcycle in southern Syria, following what it called a "suspect arrest procedure." Both suspects were detained after the live fire incident. The operation reflects Israel's aggressive posture in securing its positions since Assad's regime collapsed.
Earlier, the IDF said it killed a man suspected of attempting to infiltrate a separate military post. No Israeli soldiers were injured in either incident. These operations, while framed as defensive by Israel, contribute to mounting tensions between Tel Aviv and Damascus over control of border territory and adherence to the 1974 disengagement agreement.
