Chinese singer, composer and music educator Liu Huan died in Shanghai on September 25 at age 63, according to notices from the University of International Business and Economics and the Mango V Foundation. He became one of China’s best-known performers with popular songs and television themes, and reached an international audience in 2008 when he sang the Beijing Olympics theme, “You and Me,” with Sarah Brightman. Liu taught at the university for more than three decades, specializing in Western music history, and retired in 2023. He also mentored emerging songwriters and helped establish a fund supporting young Chinese-language musicians. At his request, no public farewell or memorial service will be held.
