More than 240 athletes from British Columbia — including competitors from Victoria — are heading to Medicine Hat, Alberta, for the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, running August 11–15. Saanich News reports the B.C. delegation is one of the province's largest-ever national teams, with 244 athletes, 75 volunteer coaches, and 22 mission staff drawn from more than 42 communities.
Over 1,700 athletes and coaches from 12 provincial and territorial chapters are expected to attend. The 10-sport event spans athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, and 10-pin bowling.
Victoria Athletes Earn Their Spots Through Provincial Qualifier
Every B.C. athlete earned their place the hard way. The 2025 Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games in Prince George — held July 10–12, 2025 — served as the primary qualifier. Over 870 athletes competed across 10 sports. Only the top performers advanced to the national roster, according to Oak Bay News.
Victoria powerlifter Meliah Motchman is one of the athletes who made the cut. She said powerlifting has built her "strength and confidence." She added, "I want to do my very best in Medicine Hat for my teammates, coaches, family, and friends."
B.C. Sends Record Delegation Led by Chef de Mission
Chef de Mission Michelle Cruickshank leads the Team B.C. operation. She praised the athletes' "unwavering commitment" and called securing a spot on the 244-person roster a result of "tremendous hard work," according to Victoria News.
The 2026 squad includes a notable first: an all-female soccer team within the B.C. lineup. That marks a shift toward gender-specific competition in a sport that was previously mostly co-ed at the national level. Dan Howe, President and CEO of Special Olympics B.C., oversees the broader provincial strategy and fundraising effort.
Medicine Hat Braces for 1,700 Visitors and $12 Million Boost
The Games are projected to inject roughly $12 million into the Southern Alberta economy. Medicine Hat has already recruited over 800 of the 1,500 volunteers it needs, according to Goldstream Gazette. The city is also using the event to push for better air service after WestJet cancelled scheduled flights to Medicine Hat Regional Airport in June 2026 — a blow to travel plans for incoming participants.
City Councillor Yusuf Mohammed said the municipality is lobbying the provincial government for sustained regional air connectivity. Local businesses can buy fundraising window decals for $250 each. The opening ceremonies are expected to draw around 3,500 spectators.
Top Performers Could Reach 2027 World Games in Santiago
The Medicine Hat Games are more than a national showcase. Athletes who finish at the top of their events will earn a shot at representing Canada at the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile, according to Sooke News Mirror.
For Victoria athletes, the stakes are personal as well as athletic. Local media has framed the journey as one of empowerment: a chance for competitors to prove what they can do on the biggest Canadian stage available to them. Expanded Special Olympics programming across Greater Victoria has helped grow B.C.'s national roster to its current record size.
