Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo suffers an ankle injury during international duty.

Cody Gakpo said Liverpool’s decision to keep him ended a summer in which Manchester City pursued him with a reported £80 million offer after he had agreed personal terms, and he is focusing on football rather than what he could not control. He and his partner, Noa van der Bij, lost their unborn son during the difficult period. Gakpo has made a strong start to the season, contributing goals and assists for Liverpool and scoring a late equalizer for the Netherlands against Germany. He was forced off during the international break with an ankle injury, and Liverpool are awaiting a medical assessment. Liverpool also have concerns over Alexander Isak, who left Sweden’s camp with a thigh problem, while Jeremie Frimpong was absent from a recent squad for unclear reasons.
Liverpool initially appeared willing to sell Gakpo, but reconsidered after struggling to recruit Yankuba Minteh or Ismaïla Sarr.
When asked whether Liverpool had been willing to let him leave before changing their minds, Gakpo replied, “Spot on.”
Gakpo said he could have done “much better” in the previous season, while another account described him as facing persistent criticism during that campaign.
