Public Libraries Nationwide Launch Diverse October Programs, Crafts, and Cultural Events

Public libraries in several communities are offering October programs, including family activities, crafts, storytimes and cultural events. Hackley Public Library in Michigan plans caregiver-child workshops, a children’s cooking session and a Michigan-themed art show, while Lubbock, Texas, branches will offer collage-making, crafts, storytimes and knitting. Shell Lake Public Library in Wisconsin will provide digital-skills help, Lego activities, a ghost-story contest and youth programs about wildlife and conservation. Boyle County Public Library in Kentucky will host a postcard event, caregiver-and-baby programs, an autism-friendly gathering, a flower show and a haunted-house experience. Foley Community Library in Alabama will hold a Hispanic Heritage Month fiesta and a touch-a-truck event, both free to attend; Everett, Massachusetts, will feature a West African kora presentation and ghost-story programs.
Hackley Public Library’s free “MI Little Cooks – Spooky Soup” session is scheduled for Oct. 24 for children ages 7–10; registration is required.
Shell Lake’s Click & Learn workshop offers one-on-one help with practical digital tasks, such as creating an email account, setting up telehealth, using Libby, and learning to use personal devices. Participants can bring their own devices or use library computers and laptops.
Shell Lake’s annual ghost-story contest challenges participants to write a story in just two sentences; youth and adult entries are accepted through Oct. 23, with winners announced Oct. 30.
Boyle County’s “Baby Steps” series focuses on storytelling with babies ages 0–18 months through four sessions on books, noise, interactive play and movement. An early-childhood development expert will attend each session, and advance registration is not required.
Foley’s Library Fiesta will include food from La Casita and cultural performances by the Mitotiani Folkloric Dance Group and St. Margaret’s Catholic Church. The touch-a-truck event will also feature music, a petting zoo and sand pits.
