LA28 Unveils Preliminary Venice Beach Triathlon Courses For The Olympic Games

Los Angeles 2028 organizers unveiled preliminary Olympic and Paralympic triathlon courses in Venice Beach, with a shared finish line overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a central transition area designed to give spectators clear views of the racing. The generally flat cycling and running routes are intended to promote fast competition, while the individual Olympic events will begin with a 1.5-kilometer ocean swim entered directly from the beach. The women’s individual triathlon on July 15, 2028, will award the first Olympic medals of the Games, followed by the men’s race on July 16 and the mixed relay on July 20. The mixed relay will feature four-person teams racing in a women-men-women-men order, with each athlete completing a swim, bike and run segment. Paralympic individual triathlons are scheduled for Aug. 18-19 and will include a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike course and 5-kilometer run across six sport classes. The courses are expected to undergo operational testing during a World Triathlon event in Venice in July 2027.
The individual Olympic swim will consist of a 1,000-meter lap, a short beach run and a second 500-meter lap. Athletes will then complete eight 5-kilometer cycling laps and four 10-kilometer running laps, with the run crossing bridges in the Venice Canals area.
In the mixed relay, each athlete will complete a 350-meter swim, a 6.6-kilometer bike leg and a 1.6-kilometer run before handing off to the next teammate.
The Paralympic swim will start from a barge beyond the breakwater, unlike the Olympic individual events, and will be followed by the 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run. The races will include athletes from six sport classes.
LA28 Chief of Sport and Games Delivery Officer Shana Ferguson said the Venice Beach events would showcase the neighborhood’s “energy, character and beauty,” while Councilwoman Traci Park said Venice would welcome athletes and fans and highlight the community’s distinctive character.
