Lululemon Founder Chip Wilson Faces Multibillion-Dollar Divorce Without a Prenup

Shannon Wilson reportedly owns about 1% of Lululemon, valued at approximately $100 million—an additional significant asset potentially relevant to the divorce proceedings.
The couple married in 2002, and Shannon Wilson is 52 while Chip Wilson is 71, according to reports.
The 2013 controversy followed Lululemon’s recall of nearly 17% of its black Luon pants after customers complained that they were see-through; the company offered refunds or exchanges, and its stock reportedly fell 17% after Wilson’s comments.
The Wilson family’s philanthropic foundation donated C$134 million, about US$97 million, to the BC Parks Foundation to help acquire and protect natural areas—the largest private donation to Canadian environmental conservation described in the report.
Wilson has continued attacking Lululemon’s post-departure strategy, saying in a 2024 Forbes interview that the brand had “become like the Gap, everything to everybody” and criticizing its use of models he viewed as insufficiently inspirational.

Wilson's wealth is concentrated in two major holdings. He owns about 8.6% of Lululemon, worth approximately $1 billion. He also holds roughly 18% of Amer Sports, valued near $3 billion. Celebrity Net Worth reports his total fortune at $6.1 billion. Shannon owns about 1% of Lululemon worth roughly $100 million. Without a prenup, the divorce could trigger major stock transfers that shift voting power and ownership stakes in both companies.
Chip and Shannon Wilson married in 2002 after more than 20 years together. Shannon, now 52, was one of Lululemon's earliest employees and its founding lead designer. She later co-founded Kit and Ace with her stepson. Vancouver Sun reports the couple has no prenuptial agreement. Divorce proceedings were filed in British Columbia Supreme Court in April. The case is sealed, so details remain hidden from public view.
Chip Wilson's fortune hinges on just two investments. His 8.6% Lululemon stake is worth roughly $1 billion. His 18% holding in Amer Sports—which owns brands like Arc'teryx and Salomon—is valued near $3 billion. TS2 Tech notes the Wilson group controls 9.5 million Lululemon shares, a voting bloc worth $963 million. Shannon's separate 1% Lululemon stake adds $100 million. Any asset split could force large stock sales or transfers, affecting both companies' ownership and shareholder dynamics.
Wilson left Lululemon's board in 2015 after backlash over remarks blaming customers' bodies for yoga pants pilling. The 2013 controversy began when nearly 17% of the company's black Luon pants were recalled. Customers complained they were see-through. The stock fell 17% after Wilson's public comments. He remains Lululemon's largest shareholder but has no formal role.
Wilson has not stayed silent. In a 2024 Forbes interview, he said Lululemon had
Wilson currently invests in multiple brands beyond Lululemon. His Amer Sports stake gives him significant influence over Arc'teryx, Salomon, and Wilson Sporting Goods. This diversified portfolio makes him a major player in the global athletic-goods industry. His $6.1 billion fortune spreads across multiple public companies and private holdings. The divorce could reshape these ownership stakes depending on how assets get divided.
