Anthropic is merging Claude Chat and Cowork into a single interface, eliminating the need for users to choose between quick questions and longer-running tasks. Anthropic said the unified system lets Claude automatically route work based on what a task requires, and background jobs continue running in the cloud even after users close their apps. The rollout begins immediately for Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile, with Free and Team plans following later.
The consolidated interface also brings in Claude Docs and Claude Slides, new tools that let users create, edit, and share documents and presentations directly within Claude. Users can export files to Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, and PDF formats. Arun Chandrasekaran, a Gartner analyst, called the shift strategic: the move signals Claude evolving from a chatbot into "an agentic platform meant for full lifecycle of knowledge work."
Why Anthropic Merged Two Separate Tools
Anthropic originally built Cowork as a dedicated space for multi-step projects, separate from Claude Design for visual work. Users complained the split was frustrating—they had to decide which tool belonged where. Anthropic wrote on its blog: "People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged." The unified interface solves that by having Claude choose the right mode automatically.
Docs and Slides Create From Chat Without Switching Apps
Claude Docs lets users create sections of a document, ask questions about content, comment on finished parts, and share the document by link. The same applies to Claude Slides for presentations. Andrew Keller, a senior product leader at Anthropic, highlighted that shared context means users can move between research and generated decks without repeating instructions. Users can start a document task on desktop and check its progress on mobile.
Asynchronous Work Continues After You Close the App
Complex agentic tasks now run in the background after users exit their browsers or apps. Anthropic upgraded Cowork's memory layer in early September to retain user context across separate chat threads. This allows longer-running jobs—generating reports, building presentations, or processing documents—to finish while you're offline and be ready when you return.
A Direct Challenge to Microsoft and Google's Workspace Tools
By embedding document editing, presentation creation, and file exports into Claude, Anthropic is positioning itself as a primary workspace entry point. Microsoft and Google embed AI assistants inside their existing apps like Word and Docs. Anthropic flips this: the AI interface becomes the container where documents originate. Analysts note this move puts pressure on Microsoft 365 Copilot and Google Gemini in Workspace. Enterprise administrators receive at least 30 days' notice before the interface changes roll out to their accounts.
